AI Automation Engineer
San Diego, CA (Hybrid)Base $90K–$130K + EquityPosted July 2026
About the role
At Hashing AI, every project starts with a real business problem and ends with a production system that runs without supervision. We build AI voice agents, email automation pipelines, calendar booking systems, and custom workflow tools for small and medium businesses. The work is hands-on from day one. We are looking for an engineer who is fluent in the AI tooling ecosystem and can move from a client conversation to a working prototype quickly. You will clarify requirements, propose a design, implement it using the right combination of LLMs, APIs, and third-party platforms, and keep iterating based on real feedback.
What you'll do
- Work directly with clients to understand their workflows, identify the specific pain points, and translate vague requirements into a concrete technical design before writing a single line of code.
- Build AI-powered automation systems using the appropriate tools for each job, including LLM APIs (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini), voice platforms (Retell, Twilio), workflow automation tools (Make, n8n, Zapier), and calendar and CRM integrations.
- Implement cleanly and ship fast. We work in TypeScript and Python. You should be comfortable building backend services, connecting APIs, handling webhooks, and wiring up third-party platforms without needing step-by-step guidance.
- Iterate based on real usage. After deployment, gather feedback from the client and their users, diagnose what is not working, and ship improvements.
- Communicate proactively throughout every engagement. If something is taking longer than expected or a better approach exists, say so early.
- Stay current with the AI tooling landscape. New models, platforms, and APIs come out constantly. Part of this role is knowing what exists and making good decisions about when to use what.
What we're looking for
- You can build working software in TypeScript or Python and are comfortable with REST APIs, webhooks, and integrating third-party services.
- You have used LLM APIs in a real project, not just run a tutorial. You understand prompt engineering, context management, and the practical limitations of current models.
- You can take an ambiguous problem description from a non-technical client and turn it into a clear design before building anything.
- You communicate clearly in writing and are proactive about surfacing blockers rather than going silent.
- You can manage multiple projects at different stages simultaneously without dropping things.
Nice to have
- –Experience with voice AI platforms such as Retell AI, Twilio, or Bland.
- –Hands-on experience with workflow automation tools like Make, n8n, or Zapier in a production context.
- –Familiarity with calendar APIs, CRM integrations, or email automation platforms.
- –You have worked with clients directly and know how to manage expectations without overpromising.
What we offer
- Base salary of $90K–$130K depending on your experience and the depth of your AI tooling background.
- Equity in the company as an early hire.
- Flexible schedule. We care about shipped work, not hours at a desk.
- You will own real client projects from the start, not support tickets or internal tooling no one uses.
- We are a small team that actually spends time together. That means team dinners, weekend outings, and treating this like something we are all building together rather than just a job.
- As we grow, we are committed to adding health benefits, 401(k), and other standard support for the people building this with us.
